Translating Literary Texts: Impediments, Cultural Implications and Possible Solutions

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the obstacles and hindrances faced by translators while translating from one language to another, along with some possible ways to minimize the differences between the intended meaning of the author in the source language and the meaning understood in the target language. This thesis will also focus on the importance of culture, context, and language structure in translation. A Bangla text will be translated into English, and that translation will be analyzed to serve the purpose of this study. Through this analysis, this paper will show how some phrases that have been translated in the target language to convey the intended meaning of the source text, express meaning in the target language with relation to both context and culture. The text I have used for this thesis is titled “আমার যত ভণিতা, জিণিয়াকে নিয়ে” (Amar joto bhonita, Jiniake nie) written by Sumon Rahman. In terms of translation theory, I have used the theory of “Dynamic Equivalence” throughout the translation, along with “Sociolinguistic approach” to translation.
